Della verità di Maurizio Abbatino, noto col nome d’arte storico di Crispino e poi con quello cinematografico-televisivo Er Freddo, si sapeva già molto.
Quasi tutto: non c’è stata cronaca della Roma criminale di cui Abbatino è stato prima protagonista e poi, da pentito, grande accusatore, in cui non facesse capolino qualche sua dichiarazione o qualche stralcio di un suo interrogatorio.

E allora, perché scrivere un libro, che poi è l’ennesimo sulla Banda della Magliana?
Con tutta probabilità, il libro è nato grazie alla testarda determinazione della coautrice, la giornalista Raffaella Fanelli, che, come ha scritto nel volume e ha dichiarato più volte, ha letteralmente stalkizzato Abbatino, ultimo boss storico e principale pentito, ritenuto sempre attendibile dagli inquirenti, in particolare da Otello Lupacchini, grande accusatore della famiglia criminale capitolina, che non a caso verga una poderosa postfazione al libro.
Già: uscito per Chiarelettere a fine giugno, La verità del freddo ha sparigliato un po’ le carte del racconto giudiziario, quello remoto che ormai confluisce nella storia e quello recente, riaperto nel 2014 con la maxinchiesta Mafia Capitale.

Ed ecco il secondo motivo per cui l’intervista ostinatamente cercata e realizzata dalla Fanelli è diventata un libro. Difficile pensare che quest’uscita editoriale importante non abbia avuto qualcosa a che fare con il processo d’appello dell’inchiesta che ha fatto tremare Roma.

Intendiamoci: Abbatino, sopravvissuto come Antonio Mancini detto Accattone ma meno coccolato di lui dai media, non ha la forza né ha avuto l’intenzione di influire sul processo in cui è alla sbarra Massimo Carminati, l’ex compare che faceva affari con la Banda ma militava nei Nar. L’unica cosa che poteva fare era lanciare il classico messaggio nella bottiglia. Ed è quel che ha fatto con grande efficacia, almeno nei confronti dell’opinione pubblica.
Già: il racconto del superpentito è coerentissimo, al punto che nel libro non si troverà nullache Abbatino non abbia già dichiarato alla magistratura (e a prescindere dall’efficacia delle dichiarazioni in sede giudiziaria).
Già: Abbatino, ribadisce la Fanelli, non depista né cambia versione, semmai omette, «perché prima o poi devi rendere conto di quello che hai dichiarato». Ma quello che ha dichiarato (e ripetuto alla Fanelli) non è mai stato smentito.
Quindi, a proposito dei grandi misteri d’Italia non si troveranno novità assolute. Ma solo le verità del Freddo narrate finalmente in un quadro completo e cristallino, perché chi le racconta, anzi le ripete al lettore comune, è un pentito vero, che ha saltato il fosso per un motivo genuino.
Ma il messaggio nuovo è un altro: in Mafia Capitale, dove gli inquirenti hanno vagliato anche le dichiarazioni di Abbatino, la magistratura giudicante, almeno quella di primo grado, non ha ritenuta valida l’ipotesi mafiosa. Quella che Er Freddo e Accattone cercano di accreditare dalla metà degli anni ’90.

Forse perché «a Roma la mafia non deve esistere». E non solo per il comprensibile danno d’immagine alla Città Eterna. Ma perché dire, specie con le sentenze, che la Banda della Magliana era una mafia, significa anche riqualificare i rapporti tra i colletti bianchi (non pochi e forse più di quanti non ne abbiano censiti inquirenti e cronisti) e la Banda, che a sua volta avrebbe funzionato come una sorta di agenzia del crimine, per conto dei colleghi calabresi, campani e siciliani, oppure per conto degli insospettabili o, infine, per entrambe le categorie.
Ed ecco che, apparsa varie volte nella storia processuale della Banda, l’aggravante mafiosa (meglio ancora: l’ipotesi di associazione a delinquere di stampo mafioso) è stata sempre espunta. E questo sembrava essere il destino del processo Mafia Capitale, prima del quale, con singolare e sinistra coincidenza, cessava il programma di protezione di Abbatino, che di fatto è diventato un bersaglio mobile, a disposizione degli ex compari finiti in galera grazie alle sue cantate o delle nuove leve, ansiose di prendere una medaglia per aver eliminato una vecchia gloria.
«Hanno voluto lanciare un messaggio: parlare non conviene», ha dichiarato Er Freddo al riguardo.
E forse potrebbe essere, ancora, più di una suggestiva coincidenza o di un’abile mossa difensiva il fatto che Massimo Carminati («Io lo ricordavo di poche parole, ora è diventato un coatto», ha commentato Crispino) durante il primo grado di giudizio si sia scatenato in una ridda di accuse nei confronti di Crispino e abbia parlato di complotto ordito dall’ex compare ai suoi danni.

Ora che la Corte d’Appello ha stabilito che, per quanto riguarda almeno Mafia Capitale, la mafia c’è, la situazione inizia a cambiare.
E il messaggio lanciato a giugno da Crispino inizia ad assumere tutt’altro significato, visto che nell’editoria le coincidenze non esistono.
L’agire di Salvatore Buzzi e Carminati è stato confermato come mafioso. E mafiosa è l’organizzazione di potere messa in piedi dai due, E, infine, l’ombra della mafia potrebbe iniziare a proiettarsi, anche a livello di ricostruzioni storico-giudiziarie sul passato della Banda e, soprattutto, sulla formidabile rete di relazioni e collusioni che ha consentito ai Goodfellas venuti dalle borgate di diventare una realtà criminale di prima grandezza.
Fin qui il messaggio nella bottiglia di Abbatino, su cui l’ultima parola spetta alla Cassazione, che è, agli occhi dei lettori più appassionati, la vera novità de La verità del Freddo.
Ciò non vuol dire che il resto del libro sia privo d’interesse. Tutt’altro, perché il suo valore di documento è a dir poco eccezionale: rivivere attraverso le parole di un suo protagonista una delle epopee criminali più forti della nostra storia contemporanea è di per sé notevole. Ed è notevole la sicurezza con cui Abbatino ricostruisce il contesto, altamente corrotto, in cui operò e si affermò la Banda, che incrociò i suoi destini nei misteri d’Italia, a partire dal Caso Moro per finire con la sparizione di Emanuela Orlandi attraverso il delitto Pecorelli.
Il fiume carsico della memoria del Freddo emerge in superficie e riporta in maniera inedita i ricordi legati ai personaggi chiave della Banda: il capo dei testaccini Enrico De Pedis, sepolto da impregiudicato nella Basilica di Sant’Apollinare a dispetto di una serie impressionante di accuse mai sanzionate in sentenze definitive; il fondatore Francesco Giuseppucci, detto Er Negro o Il Fornaretto, l’inquietante Danilo Abbruciati. E poi i neofascisti, di cui Carminati è il principale superstite.

Una serie di ricordi in cui il piano spicciolo del gangsterismo coesiste con quello, più sofisticato, delle collusioni ad alti livelli quasi senza soluzione di continuità.
Alla testimonianza di Abbatino, la prima rivolta con tanta efficacia al grande pubblico, si accompagnano le suggestive ricostruzioni storiche di Raffaella Fanelli, che arricchisce il racconto dell’ex boss con le sue incursioni nei risvolti più segreti e inquietanti della nostra storia contemporanea.
