Domenico Iannantuoni è un ingegnere milanese, che parla con una perfetta pronuncia settentrionale ma è nato a Casalnuovo Monterotaro in provincia di Foggia, dove ha vissuto, così recita la sua biografia, solo il primo anno di vita. Iannantuoni, infine, depreca l’Unità nazionale e celebra gli staterelli prerisorgimentali come dei piccoli paradisi. Sembra quasi di risentire, vent’anni dopo e a geografia invertita, le stesse cose della Liga veneta.

Poi, in seguito alle proteste dei sudisti 2.0 contro il Museo Lombroso, il vento cambia: i movimenti neoborbonici hanno individuato nell’istituto dell’Università di Torino un bersaglio e nello scienziato ottocentesco il mad doctor filosavoiardo da combattere. C’è un obiettivo unitario, insomma. E il Nostro si accoda con una certa abilità.

A dare la stura alla protesta dei neoborbonici è un articolo apparso il 2 novembre 2009, in occasione dell’apertura del Museo, sulla Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, di cui fino all’anno prima era stato direttore Lino Patruno, altro personaggio di spicco del movimentismo sudista. Il pezzo, firmato da Marisa Ingrosso, ha un titolo piuttosto forte: I briganti meridionali nella «fossa comune» del Museo Lombroso. Ma allo strillo, come accade spesso alla stampa cartacea locale, non corrisponde il contenuto. L’autrice, infatti (forse anche per schivare preventivamente qualche querela) riporta correttamente che solo l’uno per cento dei reperti umani ospitati dal Museo è correttamente schedato.

Morale: non è possibile dire con certezza a chi appartengano quei crani. Soprattutto, non è possibile affermare che il Museo torinese sia un’istituzione antimeridionale.

Ma la bufala è in circolo e molti si accontentano. Poche ore dopo l’articolo della Ingrosso, viene inaugurato un gruppo su Facebook dal nome piuttosto ridondante: Chiediamo rispetto e pace per i resti dei patrioti del Sud. La pagina ha pochi animatori e risulta inattiva dal 2011. Gli ultimi due post sono di Duccio Mallamaci, animatore anche di I meridionali contro il museo lombrosiano a torino: 8 maggio 2010. Mallamaci, docente di matematica in Piemonte ma di origini calabresi, fa parte della delegazione che va a controllare il Museo nel 2010. La guida il senatore Domenico Scilipoti, all’epoca non ancora convertito al verbo berlusconiano e ne fa parte anche Iannantuoni. Ora, prove che il lombrosario torinese pulluli di spoglie meridionali non ce ne sono. Ma tra i crani ce n’è uno adatto alla bisogna: l’unico su cui lo scienziato avesse apposto un appunto in lapis: appartiene a Giuseppe Villella, definito dal papà della criminologia moderna come “brigante calabrese”.

Può bastare. E Iannantuoni parte in quarta. Fonda il Comitato tecnico scientifico “No Lombroso” e si dà un gran da fare nei confronti del Museo: deposita denunce alla Procura della Repubblica, in cui invoca addirittura l’ipotesi di violazione di cadavere, invia appelli agli arcivescovi di Torino e Napoli e invita gli amministratori di molti enti locali ad aderire al suo Comitato. L’ingegnere, che dal curriculum risulta un esperto di marketing, è un attivista infaticabile. E si rivela abile a propagare in maniera politicamente corretta un messaggio non facile. Il borbonismo passa quasi in secondo piano nella mission di Iannantuoni per il quale far chiudere il Museo Lombroso è soprattutto un dovere umanitario. Il che, più o meno, è lo stesso contenuto delle interrogazioni parlamentari indirizzate da Scilipoti ai ministri dell’allora avversario governo Berlusconi. Scilipoti non è l’unico parlamentare a prendere le difese degli antilombrosiani: anche il deputato cosentino Roberto Occhiuto, all’epoca punta di diamante dell’opposizione targata Udc, deposita un’interrogazione. Da lì all’idea di intentare un processo al Museo il passo è breve. Sulla sua strada Iannantuoni incontra Amedeo Colacino, il sindaco di Motta Santa Lucia. Motta, circa mille anime nella parte catanzarese della Valle del Savuto, è il paese d’origine del brigante Villella. Il resto è storia nota.

È il momento di riannodare i fili del discorso: perché Lombroso e perché Villella?

Come ricorderà qualche giurista over 30, che ha fatto in tempo a seguire corsi di laurea in cui la teoria e la storia del diritto erano fondamentali, Lombroso elaborò a partire dal 1871 una teoria sull’uomo delinquente oggi ampiamente superata ma all’epoca piena di ambizioni rivoluzionarie. Secondo lo scienziato veronese la tendenza a delinquere era innata in determinati individui e questo innatismo (che lui considerava una botta d’arresto nell’evoluzione) aveva una sua controparte fisica. Detto altrimenti, era possibile riconoscere il delinquente nato e distinguerlo da quello occasionale grazie ad alcune anomalie fisiche. Lombroso credette di individuarne una proprio nel cranio di Villella, il brigante di Motta Santa Lucia, morto nel 1864 a Pavia dov’era recluso in carcere con l’accusa di furto e incendio.

Successivamente Maria Teresa Milicia, antropologa e ricercatrice dell’Università di Padova, ha condotto una ricerca impegnativa negli archivi, laici ed ecclesiastici, della Calabria per ricostruire l’identità di Villella. Il risultato di tanto impegno è Lombroso e il brigante. Storia di un cranio conteso (Salerno, Roma, 2014), in cui la studiosa dimostra che Villella non fosse un brigante né, come sostenevano i neoborbonici, un eroe della resistenza antipiemontese. Era solo un pastore dedito a piccoli reati contro il patrimonio. Un uomo sfortunato due volte: per aver subito il rigore eccessivo dei codici dell’epoca e per aver ispirato, da morto, la teoria di Lombroso.

La distanza tra la morte di Villella (1864) e l’esame del suo cranio (avvenuto nel 1871) dovrebbe sfatare un altro falso mito: Lombroso non eseguì alcuna autopsia né conobbe Villella da vivo.

Ciononostante, quelli del Comitato non demordono. Anzi: la loro pagina Facebook rigurgita di insulti nei confronti di chi non la pensa come loro. A partire dalla Milicia, che per prima o quasi ha subito i loro strali. Già: per quanto pacato nella comunicazione pubblica, Iannantuoni è polemico sulla rete e, per usare un eufemismo, non riesce a gestire troppo il dibattito, che va a ruota libera sulla base di un ragionamento autoimmune: gli altri hanno sempre torto e ragionano in un certo modo perché sono ascari al servizio, possibilmente ben pagato, di qualcun altro. Lo stesso schema di ragionamento è rintracciabile in Cento città contro il museo Lombroso, uno zibaldone piuttosto confuso scritto da Iannantuoni assieme a Rossana Lodesani e a Francesco Antonio Schiraldi e pubblicato nel 2015 da Magenes, la casa editrice collegata al Movimento neoborbonico e, soprattutto, al suo presidente, Gennaro De Crescenzo, decano del revisionismo antirisorgimentale e precursore di Aprile. Nel libro c’è di tutto. C’è il tentativo di confutare, senza metodo né basi specialistiche, il pensiero di Lombroso, che è già abbondantemente confutato. E c’è il resoconto delle battaglie culturali del Comitato. Che Iannantuoni combatte come può in tutte le sedi disponibili.

La tournée dell’Ing. non ha soste: oggi una scuola, domani un Comune, dopodomani una parrocchia. La sentenza della Corte d’appello di Catanzaro tarda ad arrivare ma lui batte il ferro per tenerlo caldo. Finora hanno aderito al suo appello vari Comuni d’Italia e le ragioni del Comitato hanno trovato sostenitori impensabili, tra cui Albano Carrisi e Povia, due noti intellettuali. E hai voglia a spiegare che Lombroso non teorizzò il pregiudizio antimeridionale, che fu invece sistematizzato dal siciliano Alfredo Niceforo, suo allievo (verso il quale il maestro si dimostrò piuttosto freddo). Hai voglia a dire che con la repressione del brigantaggio Lombroso non c’entra nulla, perché quando lui elaborò la sua teoria la fase cruenta delle operazioni militari al Sud era già finita. Il problema è che la verità storica è l’ultima preoccupazione di chi si impegna in certe battaglie e che abusare della storia è facile per chi mira a determinati obiettivi.

Occorre solo prendere atto che nel 2017 c’è chi usa le tecniche di propaganda con metodi e padronanza non dissimili da quelli dei movimenti totalitari d’inizio Novecento. In questo saranno bravi, ma non chiamiamoli meridionalisti: sarebbe un’offesa troppo grande per chi si è accostato a un filone di cui fanno parte giganti come Giustino Fortunato, Antonio Gramsci e Gaetano Salvemini.
